Dr Hussain Imam Bin Md Ismail obtained his medical degree from the University of Malaya and went on to specialise in Paediatrics in Cardiff, Wales. Later, he was awarded a scholarship to train in paediatric neurology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh. He established the first Paediatric Neurology Unit in the Ministry of Health at the Paediatric Institute of Hospital Kuala Lumpur in 1992. The first local trainee in Paediatric Neurology was recruited in 1993, and over the years, more than 20 paediatric neurologists have been trained in the Ministry of Health.
In 1999, Dr Hussain was transferred to Penang Hospital to become the head of the Paediatric Department there. Later in 2003, he was transferred back to Kuala Lumpur to head the Paediatric Institute of Kuala Lumpur Hospital and also to lead the Paediatric Services in the Ministry of Health until his retirement in 2016. After serving MOH for another 4 years, he joined the RCSI UCD Medical Campus in Penang in late 2020. He served as a member of the Malaysian Medical Council from 2022 to 2025. Dr Hussain has given expert evidence in many medicolegal cases, especially related to perinatal brain damage.
